Primarily quarried in the Markazi Province of Iran, as well as regions in Pakistan and China, it is frequently referred to by the alternate names Golden Black or Portoro Gold. This metamorphic stone is highly prized in luxury interior design for its intense contrast and sophisticated, painterly patterns, making it a favorite for statement islands, flooring, and wall cladding. Historically, while its name suggests an Italian origin like the legendary Nero Portoro, most commercial Black Gold today originates from the rich mineral deposits of the Middle East. Interestingly, its golden hues are often the result of unique mineral recrystallization involving iron oxide and organic debris trapped during the stone's complex geological formation.
