Portoro, also known as Nero Portoro or Black and Gold, is a prestigious marble quarried exclusively in the province of La Spezia, Liguria. This world-renowned stone is defined by its deep, "sepia black" background, which owes its intensity to rich organic marine matter. It is elegantly fractured by vibrant golden-yellow veins formed through the partial dolomitization of those same minerals. Its name is a corruption of the French "Porte d'Or," meaning Golden Door. Historically favored by Roman emperors and European royalty, it famously adorns the Halls of Versailles and the screening room at Paramount Studios. Due to its limited availability and delicate microcrystalline structure, it remains one of the most expensive and sought-after ornamental stones for luxury interior design.
