It's a metamorphic rock, formed from sandstone over time, and it's harder than granite — a 7 on the Mohs scale. That makes it tough against heat and scratches. The turquoise color comes from lead and water impurities trapped in potassium feldspar. That same mineral quirk is what gives the semi-precious gemstone its name.
