About Niagara Black
Niagara Black, also known as Marine Black, is a sophisticated phyllite quarried in Northern India. This fine-grained metamorphic rock sits between slate and schist, offering a deep, decadent black base accented by delicate white veining. Its smooth, satiny texture and characteristic foliation lines provide a unique aesthetic that has made it a popular alternative to soapstone.
While it shares the dark, matte appeal of soapstone, Niagara Black is remarkably durable and heat-resistant, making it an excellent choice for kitchen countertops, flooring, and wall cladding. Interestingly, despite its dark appearance, it is often used in landscaping for pathways and pool surrounds due to its natural resistance to weathering. In its highest quality, the presence of fine mica creates a subtle, elegant sheen across the surface when it catches the light.
